George VI was not born as heir to his father, George V. It was the Abdication Crisis of 1936 that led to him unexpectedly accede to the throne in place of this brother, Edward. A shy and retiring man, he did not wish to be King but took on the burden of sovereign with dignity. Now, you can celebrate King George VI with this stunning complete collection of all three proof sets issued by the Royal Mint during his reign.
- The 1937 Coronation Proof Set Issued in 1937 to commemorate His Majesty’s coronation, this is special set is notable as it was the last to contain silver coins. It was also a year of firsts – the first year of the English and Scottish shillings, the first year of the twelve-sided nickel-brass threepence, and the first year of the farthing featuring a wren design on the reverse. In total, this set contains fifteen proof coins, including eleven minted in 50% silver.
- The 1950 Half Century Proof Set The Royal Mint didn’t issue proof coin sets every year, but 1950 marked half a century so an exception was made to celebrate this milestone. The set contains nine coins, including a halfcrown, florin, English and Scottish shillings, sixpence, threepence, penny, halfpenny, and farthing.
- The 1951 Festival of Britain Proof Set The Festival of Britain was a national exhibition held 100 years on from the Great Exhibition of 1851, celebrating Britain’s achievements in science, technology, design, and the arts. The Royal Mint issued a 10-coin set commemorating this occasion. It includes only the second Crown to be struck during the King’s reign and features Benedetto Pistrucci’s famous portrayal of St. George and the Dragon.
As a collector you will also receive – at no additional charge – a handsome wooden display chest. This display has been specially designed to house and protect the coins and will make a wonderful addition to any home. In addition, you will also receive a detailed Collector’s Guide, providing fascinating narrative around each set.
