The coins that witnessed five decades of American history. More than 35 years since a Kennedy silver half-dollar was last minted for circulation, a stash of authentic, original Walking Liberty, Franklin and Kennedy silver half-dollars has resurfaced in coveted uncirculated condition. Here is your opportunity to own not just one, but 28 of these majestic coins, all of which escaped being melted down for their silver content. First minted more than 70 years ago, these beloved coins trace decades of American history, from the outbreak of World War II and the economic boom that followed, to the space race, landing on the moon and America’s Bicentennial celebration.
After the 1976 Kennedy Bicentennial half-dollar was issued, the U.S. stopped production of circulating half-dollars containing any silver. Hoarding was inevitable, compounded by government and public efforts to reclaim all silver coins for their precious-metal content. Twenty-one of the coins in this collection — all the Walking Liberty and Franklins, and the 1964 Kennedy — were minted in 90% pure silver. The remaining seven Kennedy half-dollars, which were minted in 40% silver, represent the last circulating U.S. half-dollar coins containing any silver at all.
