‘Mr Whoppit’ is a very special and famous little bear. He first appeared in 1953 in Robin, a weekly comic for children. Three years later Merrythought reproduced the pint-sized character then known simply as ‘Woppit’. And his adventures really began…
One of these little bears was given as a lucky mascot to Donald Campbell who broke eight absolute speed records on land and water in the 1950s and 60s. He re-named his bear (a little more formally) as ‘Mr Whoppit’.
Donald Campbell put all his faith in his ‘lucky talisman’ and with Mr Whoppit by his side achieved a new water-speed record of over 239 mph in his hydroplane – Bluebird. From that point onwards the pair were inseparable. And Mr Whoppit travelled the world with Campbell as a constant companion on all his record-breaking attempts.
Now, Merrythought are proud to bring back their most famous creation. Adapted from the original patterns, this quirky little bear is made from soft, light-brown alpaca and has hypnotic amber glass eyes. His little outfit of a red-felt jacket and blue shoes is simply delightful.
Mr Whoppit will be issued in a strict limited edition. Only 1,956 pieces can ever be made – celebrating the year the original bear was produced.
Actual size is 9" (22cm) standing.
