Immortalised in the rhyme “Remember, Remember”, the Gunpowder Plot was a plan to blow up King James I and his Parliament. But, just after midnight on 5th November 1605, the now-infamous Guy Fawkes was discovered in a cellar in Westminster with barrels of gunpowder. He and his fellow conspirators were executed for treason, and, every year since, the anniversary of the discovery of the Plot has been marked with bonfires and celebration.
This genuine silver shilling dates from the reign of James I. The King’s portrait features on the front of the coin, alongside the Roman numeral XII (12) denoting the coin’s value of 12 pence. On the reverse is the royal coat of arms, which incorporates the arms of Ireland and Scotland, as well as England. This is because James I was already King of Scots when he inherited the English and Irish thrones in 1603.
he shilling is encapsulated for protection and housed in a handsome custom-crafted wooden display chest, complete with lock and key, which is provided at no additional charge. A certificate of authenticity is also included.
