The sovereign is the most iconic of all our coins with a history going back to 1489. With the growth of the British Empire in the nineteenth century, it became the most widely-circulated gold coin in the world. But not all of these prestigious coins were struck in Britain. In addition to the mint in London, there were six other branches around the Empire and each coin they struck had an identifying mintmark.
Gold Sovereigns of the Empire is a collection of genuine solid gold sovereigns struck in London, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, South Africa, Canada and India, all displayed in a handsome wooden display.
You will receive one example of each of these beautiful gold coins from each of the mints and we’ll include a free magnifying loupe to help you identify each one’s mintmark. The sovereigns all feature the famous reverse sculpted by Benedetto Pistrucci depicting St George and the Dragon. Dates will vary depending upon our available stock, but will be from the reign of George V, the only monarch whose reign saw all seven mints produce sovereigns.
These 22ct gold coins are presented in circulated fine condition, due to their age and scarcity, each in a clear protective capsule for easy viewing of both front and back. The custom-crafted wooden Display Chest with gleaming golden hardware, lock and key will be sent with your third shipment – yours at no additional charge!
Each coin is 22.05mm in diameter. Display measures 7¾" x 5½” x 1¾”.
