The Story of Steiff

The story of Steiff begins in the small German town of Giengen an der Brenz in 1880 when a young woman named Margarete Steiff stitched a small elephant from felt – it’s believed to be the world’s first ever stuffed toy.

Just six years later, Margarete had sold over 5,000 elephants and was now designing other stuffed animals too.

But the breakthrough came when her nephew Richard came up with the idea for a toy in 1902.

Inspired by bears he had seen at the local zoo, Richard produced a design for a stuffed mohair bear with moveable arms and legs.  Margarete herself was sceptical but she allowed him to present his bears at the Leipzig toy fair.

It was a global hit and four years later, 1907 was to become known as “The Year of the Teddy Bear” as almost a million bears – 973,999 to be precise – were made in one year alone! This is a record which still stands to this day.

Today, over 100 years later, Steiff are still making the world’s most popular toys loved by children and collectors alike.
