The first British combat aircraft to be powered by Frank Whittle’s revolutionary invention – the jet engine – the Meteor could not have come at a better time. Only a few weeks earlier, Germany had launched the V-1 flying bombs, or “Doodlebugs”, over southern Britain. The Meteors proved adept at tackling this threat, their immense precision allowed them to get within inches of the V-1 Bomb and ‘tip’ it. This meant titling the wings to push air towards the bomb, disorientating it and knocking it off course before it reached densely populated areas. By the end of the war, Meteors were credited with downing 14 flying bombs and saving countless British lives. To commemorate the unique role the Gloster Meteor played in protecting the people of Britain during WWII, Danbury Mint presents… Britain’s First Jet Fighter – a bronzed sculpture of a Gloster Meteor F.Mk I ‘tipping’ a V-1 Bomb, complete with a genuine wartime coin and commemorative medal. You will receive:
  • A specially-commissioned bronzed sculpture of Gloster Meteor F.Mk I engaging a V-1 Bomb.
  • A genuine silver shilling from 1944, the year the Gloster Meteor entered service.
  • An exclusive commemorative medal, which pays tribute to Flying Officer “Dixie” Dean, who piloted the first Meteor to bring down a V-1 bomb.
