As the First World War went on, aerial dog-fights became a familiar sight in the skies above the trenches. With basic equipment and minimal training, pilots needed quick wits and tremendous skill to stay alive in these clashes. Some became so skilled at bringing down enemy planes that they were known as Flying Aces. Now, in memory of these men, Danbury Mint has commissioned a magnificent sculpture of a World War I Flying Ace. Presented on a wooden plinth in front of a stunning glass backdrop, the sculpture is accompanied by a genuine World War I penny and commemorative medallion exclusive to Danbury Mint.
  • Using expert guidance, our craftsmen have captured every detail. Notice the padded leather flying helmet, leather overcoat and trusty Webley MK4 pistol.
  • A gleaming glass panel decorated with an image of Britain’s most famous First World War aircraft: the Sopwith Camel. Above are the words of British Flying Ace James ‘Mac’ McCudden: “I saw British Tommies waving from a trench to me, and I felt much braver than I did a few minutes before”.
  • A genuine wartime penny.
  • An exclusive commemorative medal shows. In raised relief on the front is a Sopwith Camel in flight. On the reverse are the words of another British flying ace, Edward ‘Mick’ Mannock.
