In November 1854, the allied forces of Britain and France took to the field at Inkerman against the numerically superior Imperial Russian Army. Foggy conditions forced the armies to abandon traditional ranged combat and instead engage at close quarters. Fierce hand-to-hand fighting ensued, in which the skill of the individual soldier was more important than the might of the armies. Hidden in the fog, the troops had no choice but to act on their own initiative, and as such, the engagement became known as “The Soldier’s Battle”.

What the allies lacked in numbers they made up for in skill, bravery and tenacity, and the prolonged melee saw the British and French forces emerge victorious. To commemorate this impressive victory, Danbury Mint is proud to present…The Soldier’s Battle: The Battle of Inkerman – a magnificent, hand-painted sculpture of a British infantryman accompanied by a genuine Victorian silver shilling and a specially-minted commemorative medallion.

Actual size is 11½" (29cm) tall x 4½" (11.5cm) wide x 4½” (11.5cm) deep.
